This 10,000 sq.ft. Beaux‑Arts residence, recently completed in Chicago’s Gold Coast, draws inspiration from America’s great traditional architects, particularly David Adler. Though the home presents a grand façade along Burton Street, its footprint is surprisingly narrow — just 22 feet wide along Dearborn — making its sense of scale and proportion all the more remarkable.
The limestone exterior is detailed and installed using traditional methods, and the mahogany windows are painted on the exterior and stained on the interior to honor classical precedent. The fourth floor is tucked within the steep slate‑tiled roof, with dormer windows providing light and allowing the home to maintain the proper proportions of a three‑story façade. Because the first floor sits half a level below grade, the formal entry occurs on what is technically the second floor.
The entry sequence is one of the home’s most distinctive features. The front door opens beneath a stair that runs along the outer wall, allowing the entry hall to sit at the true center of the plan. The living room occupies one side of this axis, the dining room the other. The upper floors follow a similar organizational logic, with major rooms positioned at each end of the house and the stair and ancillary spaces arranged between them.
Throughout the main entry level, stair hall, and living room, wired white oak paneling is executed in a refined mid‑century transitional style. The dining room is paneled in vellum, creating a warm, luminous counterpoint. The full professional kitchen spans the entire 20‑foot width of the home and combines polished wenge wood, polished nickel frames and hardware, and white marble for a crisp, tailored effect.
The upper levels include a library and four bedrooms, while the lowest level contains a guest suite, a large media room, and full staff quarters. The result is a residence that marries classical rigor with contemporary livability — a home of elegance, craftsmanship, and enduring architectural character.
