Vintage 4500 sq. ft. apartment Renovation and Decoration

Location

Chicago, Il

Architect and Interior Designer

Scott Himmel & Co

General Contractor

Maritime Construction Co.

This 4,500 square foot vintage condominium occupies one of only three intact residences remaining within a grand 1927 apartment house overlooking Belmont Harbor in Chicago. Following decades of incremental alterations, Scott Himmel & Co. was commissioned to comprehensively re plan the building, reducing the apartment count from 75 to 44. Inspired by Benjamin Marshall’s 1550 North State Parkway, the large scale residences retain formal, classically proportioned layouts, with rooms unfolding in French enfilade sequence beneath 10 foot ceilings and expansive triple hung windows.
The enfilade of the living room, dining room, and library was preserved, along with the centered turn into the primary suite, reinforcing the clarity of the original plan. Three children’s bedrooms were re established in their historic locations, paired with newly configured closets. The interiors accommodate a collection of 1930s French and Italian furnishings alongside present day avant garde pieces and custom seating designed by the firm. Antiqued panel moldings and hand glazed walls restore the patina and atmosphere of the apartment as it would have been experienced in the late 1920s.
